Wonder Woman of the Week: Wendie Renard
This week's Wonder Woman is one of history's greatest women's soccer players in the world. While there's certainly a lot of attention on the US Women's National Team soccer players, this French footballer is one of the best in the world and lives in relative obscurity under the shadow of US women's soccer. Wendie Renard was born on a French Caribbean island as the youngest of four daughters to a father who died of lung cancer when Wendie was only eight years old. Renard started her soccer career playing for a local club on Martinique before heading to mainland France at fifteen years old to make it in the big leagues- at least, big leagues for women's soccer.
In 2006, Wendie Renard joined Lyon's football club and has played for the team ever since. Renard has appeared in over two hundred fifty matches for the club since joining and has helped lead the team to several winning seasons- fourteen to be exact. Renard has also been a staple of France's women's national team since 2011 in a friendly match against Switzerland. Since then, Renard has appeared in two World Cups and two Olympics and was the team captain from 2013 to 2017. Since 2011, Renard has appeared in over one hundred international matches and has scored twenty-five international goals.
