Wonder Woman of the Week: Maya Moore
The Wonder Woman this week is not only one of the top basketball players in the WNBA, but is also a herald for social justice. As a child, Maya Moore was called one of the greatest high school basketball players of her generation before heading to college at the University of Connecticut- at the time the greatest collegiate women's basketball program in the country. As a UConn player, Moore led the team to the 2009 Championship title and earned the John Wooden Award for most outstanding women's basketball player in doing so. The following year, Moore led the team to a second consecutive title before repeating that stream for a third year and helping make the UConn women's basketball statistically the greatest collegiate basketball program for women or men.
After finishing college ball, Maya Moore became 2011's first overall draft pick into the WNBA joining the Minnesota Lynx. Moore would play for the Lynx from 2011-2018 and helped lead the team to several championship titles including 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017; and personally earned the Player of the Year award in 2014. Moore also played oversees in Spain, China, and Russia with the teams Ros Casares Valencia, Shanxi Flame, and UMMC Ekaterinburg helping lead the 2012 Spanish league title for Ros Casares Valencia and three Chinese league titles with the Shanxi Flame. Following the 2018 WNBA season, Moore voluntarily paused her basketball career and began focusing on social justice- using her platform and resources to grow awareness for inequalities in US culture. Her move would spark immense controversy, but it would also spark change- convincing the WNBA to join her and begin expanding awareness for social injustice in particular regards to African-Americans and women.
