Wonder Woman of the Week: Lucy Lawless
This week's Wonder Woman portrayed another famous Amazonian warrior princess in popular culture and lives up to the name in her real life. Lucy Lawless was born in New Zealand in 1968 and has portrayed numerous strong female characters on screen, including her most famous role as Xena- an Amazonian warrior princess. Xena was more than a standard for women's empowerment though. The bisexual warrior on screen made Lawless an icon for the LGBTQ community and helped change the depiction of LGBTQ characters in mainstream media.
Lucy Lawless lived up to her character in real life too. Lawless has long been an activist for LGBTQ rights including in regards to marriage equality. Lawless also recently spoke out against a costar from her days as Xena to speak out against his toxic behaviors and support of fringe extremist groups. Lawless is also an activist for environmental protection and helped the organization prevent oil companies from using her native New Zealand as a launching point for illegal oil speculating in Antarctica.
