Wonder Woman of the Week: Jillian Morris Brake
Once again we've come to a Shark Week in which we continue out tradition of spotlighting shark specialists. This year's Shark Week Wonder Woman of the Week is a shark researcher who helps bring shark research into classrooms to help kids learn more about some of the oceans' top predators. Jillian Morris Brake was born in Maine and fell in love with the ocean at a young age. Later in life, Morris Blake became a marine biologist who specializing in researching ocean conservation and sharks. It comes as no surprise then that this marine biologist has spent thousands of hours in the field (or more specifically the ocean) on dives researching the role sharks play in protecting the delicate ecosystem of the world's oceans. Morris Blake is also not simply a biologist, she's also a marine explorer, a scuba instructor, and an educator.
Jillian Morris Brake founded Sharks4Kids to help educate children on shark conservation and marine biology. Morris Brake's goal for the organization is to help create a new generation of shark advocates in a world where shark species rapidly become endangered- and in many cases critically endangered- due to climate change, overfishing, and the illegal shark fin trade. Morris Brake has even published a shark themed children's book Norman the Nurse Shark, has appeared in several shark documentaries- including for Shark Week on Discovery Channel, and was a co-principle investigator on a Dutch tiger shark research expedition. Sharks are some of the oceans' most important predators who help regulate the delicate balance of ocean ecosystems rapidly descending into chaos due to climate change, and researching and conserving sharks is an incredibly important aspect in protecting the world's oceans. Marine biologists like Jillian Morris Brake are doing super-heroic work in helping conduct this vital research and education future generations on the importance of these incredible creatures.
