Wonder Woman of the Week: Elizabeth Taylor
This week's Wonder Woman was- and in many ways still is- one of Hollywood's most iconic leading ladies. Elizabeth Taylor helped carve a path for women early in the industry by navigating the field by her own way and fighting hard for creative control of her image on the silver screen. Taylor started her acting career as a child actor, and remained on the scene through her teenage years. Early in her career, Talor hated the roles assigned to her and by the mid 1950's managed to wrestle a tremendous about of independence for herself over what roles she would portray.
By the end of the 50's Elizabeth Taylor had become an award winning actress. Taylor continued her award-winning performances throughout the 1960- especially in films like Cleopatra, and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. Taylor's career slowed down in the late 60's and early 70's to support her sixth husband. She continued with small roles in advertisement and television though, and was one of the first celebrities to support victims of HIV/Aids- cofounding an Aids research foundation in 1985.
