Wonder Woman of the Week: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
The Wonder Woman this week is a politician helping change the face of United States politics. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a United States Representative from New York who assumed federal office in January of 2019. Ocasio-Cortez defeating a fellow Democrat in the primaries who held the seat for ten years. In the general election, Ocasio-Cortez defeated a Republican candidate and earned her inaugural seat in the US House of Representatives. In 2020, Ocasio-Cortez earned reelection. Earning her first seat at 29, Ocasio-Cortez becamse the youngest woman to serve in the US House.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a firm advocate for reforms in federal immigration laws, foreign policy, environmental protection, healthcare, LGBTQ+ civil rights, and Puerto Rican statehood. Ocasio-Cortez is only one of several young Congresspersons establishing themselves as the new face of the United States government. Because of their relatively young age, these politicians better reflect the values of the changing American demographic and- in most cases- represent the best values of a generation of Americans advocating for expansion of civil liberties, promotion of universal healthcare, and reforming immigration policies.
