The Plaza Walls of Downtown Oklahoma City

It is summer break in Oklahoma and I am forced to leave the house with the kids! What’s a family on a budget to do?! I moved to Oklahoma in late 2020, during the height of the pandemic, and I am still learning my new state. I’ve discovered some really great places here and I have a ton more to explore! Any parents of “pandemic children” know that getting out of the house is a tall order–especially during the heat of the summer. I made an oath to my three kids that we would go on adventures every week this summer, and although this promise seemed a bit of a tall order at the time, this past weekend, we stumbled into the Plaza Walls and I realized that adventures really are just waiting around the corner!

The Plaza Walls are a fun area of downtown Oklahoma City where the streets, alleys, and even several stores, are filled with artwork. I initially intended to take my kids thrifting at a thrift store named Dig It! when I discovered the Plaza Walls. (I also discovered that 90% of the thrift stores I wrote down to visit soon were on this street–score!!) While walking to Dig It! from my parked car, I saw a mural that I asked my kids to stand in front of so I could take pictures of them–it was huge and had multiple styles–so my daughters stood in front of the part they liked most while my son stood in front of the part he liked most.

When I was done, I was informed by a passerby that the Plaza Walls are effectively “reset” every September–so the murals we saw this weekend will not be the same by this time next year! He also pointed us in the direction of where part of the murals took over an alley for us to walk through–which led us directly to the other side of the block where Dig It! was located and waiting. After exploring the eclectic and adorable Dig It!, my kids and I continued to walk and explore the Plaza Walls area for about 20 more minutes before they decided they were too hot and tired to continue our adventure any further. I will most definitely be planning on visiting the Plaza Walls again soon–with the kiddos, or with my hubby on a date–there was so much more to explore and experience!
