After decades of political and social compromises led to a delay in the conversation about ending slavery in the United States, a full-scale civil war broke out which would decide forever the future of slavery in North America. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians died before an end to the hostilities, and- in the end- slavery was abolished in the United States. US culture today is still very much shaped by the conflict and the politics behind the American Civil War and the long-term impacts its conclusion would draw across the American landscape.
