Amish Cuisine

It may be hard to believe, but some of the best food in the American Northeast is food you'll never find in a major city. Quietly famous for their locally-produced honey, apple pies, and maple syrup (just to name a few), the Amish put a lot of work into making high-quality food.

The Amish are a religious group that arrived in North America from Switzerland when the US was still a series of British Colonies and eventually spread out to form communities in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, and Ontario where they continue to practice lifestyles unique to the early 18th Century.

But don't right the Amish off as backwoods religious extremists. The Amish are a strictly pacifist people, practice modern medicine, lead guided tours of their communities to educate visitors about their culture, and make some incredible cuisine unique to the United States often referred to as Pennsylvania Dutch.
