This week's Wonder Woman is one of a handful of women to earn a World Champion title in international surfing. Sofia Mulanovich became the first South American woman to earn a world title in 2004 after winning the highest number of events per season in her career. Although Mulanovich's sole world title came in 2004, Mulanovich continued to make a name for herself for the remaining seasons of her career as a tough competitor that helped elevate the level of competition and inspire more South American women to succeed in the sport.
Sofia Mulanovich earned a spot in the Surfers Hall of Fame in 2007 for her achievements in and out of the water. Mulanovich toured the world to help inspire more women and girls to take up the sport and maintained a professional respect for her opponents in the water. After her championship season, Mulanovich won seven more Championship Tour events before leaving the Championship Tour after the 2009 season. In 2015, Mulanovich earned a spot on the Surfing Walk of Fame in Huntington Beach.
