Wonder Woman of the Week: Tiana Metuarau

For those readers outside of the Commonwealth Countries, netball is a sport similar to basketball in former British Colonies and has been growing tremendously in talent in New Zealand in the last decade. Maori (the native people of New Zealand) have been increasingly participating in this sport in such growing numbers that netball matches in New Zealand's ANZ Premiership league often blend English and Maori languages during broadcasts. One of the strongest athletes rapidly rising to fame in New Zealand's league is Maori (plus Tahitian, Cook Islander, and Scottish) netballer Tiana Metuarau.

At only eighteen years old, Tiana Metuarau helped lead her team- the Central Pulse- to their first championship title, beginning with leading her team in a pre-game Haka (traditional war dance of the Maori People) before the start of the final game. Metuarau is rapidly becoming a leader among her peers as well as a powerful role model for young women and girls in the sport in her home country. And if you're interested in getting into netball, folks outside of New Zealand can watch games for free online at the ANZ Premiership website.
