Wonder Woman of the Week: Kacey Musgraves

This week's Wonder Woman is a musician redefining country music in an age where women are reclaiming the genre from a decade of music videos featuring women in bikinis and songs about disrespect towards women. Kacey Musgraves started writing her own music at eight years old and began playing the mandolin at twelve. By the time she graduated from high school, Musgraves was already recording demos to make money.

Kacey Musgraves signed her first record deal in 2008 and began writing and performing music professionally. In 2012, Musgraves joined Lady Antebellum for their Own the Night Tour and began writing songs for well-known country singer Miranda Lambert. For her work in songwriting, Musgraves earned several awards between 2012 and 2015 including Best Country Song and Best Country Album. In late 2014, Musgraves launched her first tour and began working on her second album as a new household name in country music.

Between 2015 and 2018, Kacey Musgraves recorded three albums, performed on several late night talk shows, and appeared on several albums with other country bands. Musgraves' style blends country roots with Americana and alternative- citing musicians and bands such as Weezer, Lee Ann Womack, John Prine, and Electric Light Orchestra as major influences. Musgraves' lyrics challenge stereotypical country style by referencing pro LGBT movements, safe sex practices, and recreational drug use.
