Wonder Woman of the Week: Em Carey
The Wonder Woman this week is an incredible human being who turned a traumatic accident into fuel for inspiration. While on vacation in the Swiss Alps, Em Carey wanted to scratch skydiving off her list of things to do before she died and jumped out of a helicopter with a skydiving guide. The parachute failed however and nearly led to Carey's death. The young woman awoke with an unconscious guide still strapped to her back and realizing she had no feeling in her legs. Eventually, Carey managed to get medical attention, but lost the use of her legs as a result of the accident.
Carey suffered both physically and mentally as a result of her accident- struggling with identity in the wake of her traumatic experience. To help recover mentally, Carey began sharing her experiences through an online blog where she talked about her travels and artwork. The young woman slowly regained the use of her legs and gained a new outlook on life- deciding to make a career of art and travel.
Em Carey now spends her time making art, traveling the world, and advocating for survivors of traumatic injuries- and has become a major source of inspiration for women and girls.
