Wonder Woman of the Week: Marta

This week's Wonder Woman- Marta Vieira da Silva aka Marta- is a world record holding, world cup playing, and world inspiring soccer player from Brazil. The soccer player represents Brazil at the international level and as of 2018 represented the Orlando Pride in the National Women's Soccer League. But the dominant force on the pitch is more than a powerful forward. Marta's record scoring has led her to become a national symbol of pride for her home country Brazil and is one of a handful of athletes (male and female) who act as FIFArepresentatives for Brazil.

Marta holds the world record for most number of goals recorded in FIFA Women's World Cups with 15 total world cup goals- which she accomplished with her fifteenth goal of her FIFA career in a match against South Korea in the 2015 tournament. FIFA consistently adds her name to the list of top 11 athletes in women's soccer and as such, the player is considered the greatest female soccer player of all time. On top of these impressive credentials, Marta earned the title of FIFA World Player of the Year five years in a row between 2006 and 2010, won the Golden Ball and Golden Boot Awards at the 2007 Women's World Cup, and earned the Silver Medal with her team in the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics.

Marta's trick footwork, strong striking, and unpredictable style of play make her a dominant force on the pitch; but Marta also maintains strong leadership both on her national team and within the NWSL. Whether it means taking the support role in assists for goals or in keeping morale high among her team- especially with young players and team rookies- Marta inspires her team to do their absolute best.
