Wonder Woman of the Week: Jessica Mendoza
There's more to this sports broadcaster that her witty banter during baseball games. Jessica Mendoza is an All-American athlete, multiple medal winning Olympian, and a former president of the Women's Sports Foundation. Her sport took her across the world to compete in Olympic finals, NCAA championships, and broke her into the male dominated profession of Major League Baseball as a sportscaster.
Mendoza reached All-American status as a high school softball player before starting at Stanford University in 1999. Over her four years in Stanford softball, Mendoza helped lead the team to their first Women's College World Series and set career records in hits, runs, and stolen bases still unbeaten as of 2017.
Jessica Mendosa turned toward the Olympics after graduating from Stanford and represented the United States in 2004 and 2008 at the Athens and Beijing Olympics. There, Mendoza helped earn Team USA a gold and silver medal over those two Olympic years.
In 2014, Mendoza started working as an ESPN live sports coverage anchor which would later lead to her groundbreaking job in 2015 when she became the first female analyst for a Major League Baseball. Since her debut, Mendoza has become a new staple in the booth for the MLB and ESPN Baseball.
Apart from her on-the-field successes (and in the booth?), Mendoza is a former president of the Women's Sports Foundation- and organization created by Billie Jean King for the purpose of advancing women in sports.
