High in the rugged highlands of 18th-century Ethiopia, where stone castles rise from the mist and faith shapes the rhythm of daily life, Queen Mentewab emerged as one of the most formidable figures of her time. Born into a noble family, she ascended to power through her marriage to Emperor Bakaffa, but it was after his death that her true influence unfolded. As regent for her young son, Iyasu II, Mentewab navigated a complex political and religious landscape, asserting authority in a court often resistant to female rule. Her presence was not ornamental—it was decisive, strategic, and enduring.

Mentewab’s reign coincided with a period of shifting power dynamics within the Ethiopian Empire. Regional lords vied for influence, and the delicate balance between monarchy and nobility was under constant strain. Yet she proved herself adept at diplomacy and governance, forging alliances while maintaining imperial cohesion. She also became a patron of religious and architectural endeavors, commissioning churches and fostering spiritual life. These acts were not merely devotional; they reinforced her legitimacy and left a physical imprint on the cultural landscape that still resonates today.

But Mentewab’s story is not solely one of politics and strategy. It is also a narrative of resilience in the face of deeply entrenched gender norms. In a society where leadership was overwhelmingly male, she carved out space for female authority without relinquishing her identity as a mother and matriarch. Even after her son’s death, she continued to wield influence during the reign of her grandson, navigating court rivalries that eventually led to conflict with another powerful woman, Empress Wubit. These tensions reveal a nuanced portrait of power—one not defined simply by gender, but by ambition, loyalty, and survival.

Today, Mentewab stands as a symbol of possibility for Ethiopian women and girls. Her life challenges assumptions about the limits of women’s leadership in history and offers a legacy rooted in courage and vision. In classrooms, communities, and conversations about the future, her story continues to inspire—a reminder that even in the most restrictive circumstances, determination can reshape the boundaries of what is possible.
