This week's heroine is one of the greatest musicians of the 20th Century. Emmylou Harris wove her unique sound with Americana rock to become an icon of rock and roll music- all the while setting an example for young women and girls hoping to break into the music scene. Harris was largely raised by her mother while her father suffered as a prisoner of war during the Korean War. While in high school, Harris developed a talent for music which she built upon during her time at university under the influence of Bob Dylan's and Pete Seeger's music. Harris dropped out of college and began her mission to break into the scene.

In 1971, Harris joined a trio of country musicians which delivered Harris to musician Gram Parsons. Parson died of a drug overdose before the two could release their second album. Harris performed with various other musicians and bands until 1981. In 2982, Harris moved to Nashville to advance her career in country music. Harris continued to collaborate with fellow musicians including Dolly Parton until 2000 when she joined a team of country performers recording music for the film O Brother Where Art Thou?. Harris continues to perform with fellow country musicians- especially in concerts promoting women in music.
