Wonder Woman of the Week: Lolo Jones

Lolo Jones is a rare dual-sport athlete whose career spans both Summer and Winter Olympic disciplines. Born Lori Susan Jones in 1982 in Des Moines, Iowa, she grew up facing poverty and instability, often living in church basements and motels with her single mother and siblings. Despite these hardships, Jones excelled in track and field during high school, eventually earning a scholarship to Louisiana State University, where she became a standout hurdler. Her specialty, the 100-meter hurdles, brought her international attention, particularly during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where she was favored to win gold but famously clipped the ninth hurdle, finishing seventh. That moment, both heartbreaking and defining, became symbolic of her resilience and determination to return stronger.

Jones’ career is marked not only by her track achievements but also by her bold leap into bobsledding. After missing the podium in the 2012 London Olympics, she joined the U.S. women’s bobsled team, showcasing remarkable athletic versatility. By 2014, she competed in the Winter Olympics in Sochi, making her one of the few athletes in history to compete in both Summer and Winter Games. This transition was not just a publicity stunt—it was a testament to her strength, speed, and willingness to embrace challenge. Alongside teammate Jazmine Fenlator, Jones brought new energy and attention to women’s bobsledding, further broadening her athletic legacy.

Beyond the track and the ice, Lolo Jones has become a prominent voice on issues of faith, perseverance, and self-worth. Open about her Christian beliefs, struggles with injuries, and experiences with online criticism, she has used her platform to inspire others facing personal and professional setbacks. Whether through her motivational speaking, candid interviews, or competitive spirit, Jones continues to redefine what it means to be a multidimensional athlete—one who runs, races, and rises, again and again.
