Wonder Woman of the Week: Stephanie Murphy

Our Wonder Woman this week is one of the United States' under-appreciated politicians. As a Congresswoman, this week's Wonder Woman spearheaded efforts to establish sensible gun ownership laws, prosecute conspiracy theory-driven renegades, reform immigration laws, and reform law enforcement across the nation. What's more fascinating is that this self described Capitalist in reality approaches the philosophy from a Hamiltonian perspective in her approach to utilizing federal intervention to harmonize economic interests in order to establish sustainable, small business support. Stephanie Murphy was born in Vietnam in 1978, but fled with her family by boat in 1979. After their boat ran out of fuel, a US Navy vessel saved the family, and the family relocated to Virginia where young Stephanie grew up.

Stephanie Murphy would later attend the College of William and Mary to earn a degree in economics before getting a Master's Degree from Georgetown in Foreign Service. Murphy soon however went into public service by becoming a Congresswoman for Florida in Washington. There, Murphy would fight hard for immigration reform including for providing more opportunities for refugees. Murphy would also fight hard to limit the NRA's political power in their constant prevention of sensible gun ownership reform. Although Murphy identified as a staunch advocate for Capitalism, her stance wasn't as religiously Capitalist as Republican politicians. Instead, she advocated for increased federal regulation in supporting small business- especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, with one of her triumphs being financial support for small businesses affected by the pandemic.

Stephanie Murphy announced in 2022 that she would not be seeking another term as Congresswoman, but she's leaving behind several open doors. Murphy not only worked to connect Centrist Republicans with Democratic causes, she also created more opportunities for women, Asian-Americans, and refugees to have more access to politics, to have their voices heard, and to make the United States beacon of hope for reasonable reform. US politics are a bit of a garbage dump right now (to sugar-coat things), but thanks to Congresswoman Murphy, achievable and meaningful goals seem more in reach than ever before.
