This Week's Wonder Woman is one of the top athletes in her sport in the world. Born in 1999 in Costa Rica, Brisa Hennessy practically grew up in the ocean. Hennessy surfed her first wave at only three years old- standing on a board in the ocean while others were first learning how to run. At nine, Hennessy already knew she wanted to pursue a career in competitive surfing. The Hennessy family packed their bags and moved to Hawaii to help their daughter chase her dreams- and those dreams did not stay dreams for long. As a youth surfer on the competitive circuit, Hennessy rapidly made a name for herself in the birthplace of modern surfing. In fact, Hennessy even made a name for herself among the pros on the Championship Tour (surfing's top tier league) when she defeated Sally Fitzgibbons (another Wonder Woman of the Week) in 2017's final event of the season.
It's no wonder then that at eighteen years old, Brisa Hennessy entered the Championship Tour herself in 2018 and rocked her rookie season. Not only was Hennessy the first Costa Rican to qualify for the surfing pros, but she also maintained that status by finishing in the top ten in seven 2019 Championship Tour events- no small feat for professional surfing, especially given the level of competition. In fact, Hennessy's 2019 season performance earned her a direct qualification into the Tokyo Olympics- the first to feature surfing. On top of that, Hennessy was one of only five Costa Rican athletes to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in any sport- making her a massive poster girl for Costa Rican athletics.
