Trip Overview

  • Explore the culture of rural Patagonia

  • Learn to herd from horseback in the Patagonian countryside

  • Stay with locals and see the real heart of Central Asia's nomadic culture

Trip Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive into Bariloche. Your airport transfer will bring you to the hotel where you will meet Amelia, Lauren, and the other Between the Ears riders. Spend your afternoon exploring the alpine town of Bariloche and grab any last minute supplies you may need. In the evening, attend a pre-ride brief followed by a group dinner at a traditional Argentine steakhouse.

  • Day 2: Transfer 3.5 hours to the yurts. Enjoy lunch before we pack our gear, meet our horses and local guides, and head out on the adventure of a lifetime. We will spend 2.5 to 3 hours in the saddle, riding alongside the crystal clear Chubut river past many homesteads, including of the Miranda family, who has lived in the valley for over 100 years. Our first overnight will be spent in tents under an unbeatable starscape after dinner around the fire.

  • Day 3: Begin to climb over rocky and rolling hills on trails used by local people to move their livestock. Ride towards the towering rocky peaks of the mountain corridor, or cordillera. From here we will reach the legendary Alto Chubut, a giant valley set between mountain ranges. After 7 to 8 hours of riding we will reach the refuge we will call home for the night, tucked into an ancient lenga forest.

  • Day 4: Travel through the valley of the Pantanoso stream back to the Chubut river. Ride for 4 to 5 hours between mountain peaks before we set up camp along the river banks. Spend the evening around the fire, sharing an asado, and watching the horses graze as the sun sets in the valley.

  • Day 5: Ride out of Alto Chubut and past abandoned gold and silver mines. Learn the stories, both past and present, of the Miranda family that owns and stewards the land we will be riding over this day. After 4 or 5 hours in the saddle we’ll reach our cozy yurts and be greeted with a warm shower, a home-cooked meal, and a glass of Argentine red wine or a cold local beer.

  • Day 6: Climb to the top of the mountain range on horseback to reach panoramic views of the Andes and the surrounding valleys. Enjoy packed lunch near a high mountain lagoon before hiking to an alpine lake. Ride through old growth forest and return to our yurts after 6 to 8 hours. Enjoy a warm shower and swap stories from the day over a candlelit dinner.

  • Day 7: Take in the breathtaking landscape one last time on a fast-paced 3-hour ride. Say goodbye to the gauchos and our 4-legged partners that carried us on our journey before beginning the transfer back to Bariloche. Stop for lunch in El Bolson, enjoy one last group dinner in Bariloche, and spend the night in the hotel.

  • Day 8: Check out of the hotel and travel to the airport via pre-arranged transfer.

Overview: Spend 6 days riding across the Patagonian steppe, into native forests, and through the Andes mountain corridor on sturdy, sure-footed Criollo and Criollo-crosses. Pack out all of your belongings and spend 5 nights camping in tents or yurts. Given the mountainous terrain, the pace is slower but there will be faster riding on the final day of the ride. Arrival and departure nights are spent in a hotel in San Carlos de Bariloche. Minimum of six guests and maximum of eight guests.
