When people think of mariachi bands, they typically picture a group of men with large moustaches and even larger instruments, but one mariachi band is challenging stereotypes in this Mexican folk music genre. Flor de Toloache is certainly not the only female mariachi band, but they are certainly the most up-and-coming, and with that title, the women of the band are breaking barriers for women in music and inspiring a new wave of mariachi musicians.

The women of Flor de Toloache are based out of New York City and have grown their name to expand across boundaries. Their original goal when creating the band in 2008 was to create a safe place for women musicians to be able to practice their art and that idea spread to become a full mariachi band of badass women singing traditional Mexican folk songs as well as new, original compositions from band members. The unity among band members has has allowed them to endure all the catcalls women in music all-too-often receive by establishing a support network of cooperation and compassion.
