This week's spotlight is a soccer player that combines hard work, dedication, and a passion for her sport to become more than a symbol of hope for young women and girls in soccer; but for the LGBT community, for the entire country of Wales, and for people across the world struggling to find support. Before the launch of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), Jess Fishlock played for several soccer clubs across the UK. The soccer star really began to shine however when joining the NWSL Seattle Reign club in 2013.
After starting with the Reign, Fishlock doubled her schedule with back-to-back football seasons by playing in the Australian league while simultaneously coaching her team there. As the head coach and captain of her Australian club, Fishlock led her team to winning two club championships. Fishlock also represented Wales' women's national team and led the team to unprecedented success culminating with just narrowly missing qualification for the 2019 FIFA World Cup.
In 2018, Jess Fishlock received the high honor of receiving a Most Excellent Order of the British Empire award- a symbol the Queen of England bestowed on the soccer player for her unprecedented growth of Welsh soccer, her powerful work with the LGBTQ community in the UK and worldwide, and her status as a major role model for women and girls in sports. The athlete continues to represent the Seattle Reign in the NWSL, continues her active roles in the Australian W-League, and continues to serve on the Welsh National Team within FIFA.
