Ann Curry was one of the first female news anchors in the United States and would go on to become a voice of calm as a noted reporter in war zones and natural disaster areas. This week's Wonder Woman hails from Guam, grew up in Japan, and began her career in Oregon. Curry notes several 1970's civil rights movements as the inspiration for wanting to become a journalist and began her career as a newscaster in Medford, Oregon. Curry soon advanced to reading the news in Portland before moving to Los Angeles where she would earn several Emmy Awards for her work.
Ann Curry advanced further to become a national news reporter with NBC News where she reported on wars in Albania, Kosovo, Rwanda, Iraq, and Sri Lanka. Curry also dealt with conflict in the newsroom where male peers established a culture of sexual harassment and abuse in the workplace. While reporting on the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan, Curry and her female peers dealt with toxic workplace sexual harassment from their male peers.
Ann Curry represented herself and her peers in a lawsuit against NBC News due to the sexual harassment and abuse in the workplace and her lawsuit helped uncover a larger trend in US workplaces. Curry's lawsuit helped women afraid to speak about their stories of harassment and abuse come forward with their stories and opened a proverbial door for women enduring similar stories to be able to feel comfortable telling their stories. Curry's career did not end with the lawsuit either. The reporter would later go on to work with PBS News and The View as a guest reporter/host.
